What Clamp Size Do I Need?Updated 20 hours ago
Picking the wrong clamp is one of the most common build mistakes — let’s fix that 🔩👊
Clamps are what secure your bars to your fork and compression system. But not all clamps fit all bars. The size you need depends entirely on your bar diameter and whether you're using SCS or not.
Here’s how to figure it out 👇
🔢 First: What Size Are Your Bars?
There are 2 main types of bar diameters:
Bar Type | Outer Diameter | Inner Diameter | Common Materials |
---|---|---|---|
Standard | 31.8 mm | 28 mm | Aluminum & Steel |
Oversized | 34.9 mm | 32 mm or 28 mm | Aluminum or Steel (HIC) |
💡 Important: Just because a bar is oversized on the outside doesn’t mean it’s oversized on the inside. Aluminum bars usually have standard inner diameter even if they’re oversized outside.
🧩 Clamp Types & What They Fit
Clamp Type | Fits | Notes |
---|---|---|
Standard Clamp (31.8 mm) | Standard bars only | Great for aluminum bars |
Oversized Clamp (34.9 mm) | Oversized bars only | Needed for steel HIC bars |
Oversized Clamp with Shim | Both standard & oversized bars | Shim makes it universal |
SCS Clamp | Bars with no slit only | Use with SCS compression only |
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
Trying to use a slitted bar with SCS – won’t hold properly unless you cut off the slit or use a bar adapter
Forgetting the shim – many clamps come with one to help fit smaller bars
Choosing a clamp with the wrong bolt layout – triple or quad clamps may add more strength
🧠 Pro Tip
If you're unsure, choose a universal clamp with shim — it works for most setups. Just make sure your bar has the right slit/no-slit status depending on your compression.
